Who is this for?

The Catering competition focuses on the essential skills needed within the catering industry. The Foundation Skills competitions have been created to showcase the skills of students with special educational needs and disabilities, additional learning needs, or who require additional support for learning, who are currently undertaking a course with an FE or training provider at Entry level or level 1.

These competitions provide opportunities for students and learners to develop their vocational skills, wider skills for work, personal, social, and independence skills.

Food and drink services

Overview

For a memorable meal, guests often remember the quality of the service as much as the food and drink served.

This BRAVO competition focuses on the role of front-of-house staff in a range of food and beverage operations.

This means that restaurant servers must show extensive knowledge of all types of cuisine and dishes, especially the ingredients and cooking style of the dishes on an a la carte menu. They will need to know and understand the methods of preparation and serving and the tools used.

Competitors in Professional Restaurant Service must also be able to display good social skills, excellent personal presentation as well as safe and hygienic working practices.

Competitors should have practical skills and a good understanding of different styles of food & beverage service; formal & casual dining, table, table theatre, gueridon & silver service, cocktail & mocktail preparation & service, as well as knowledge & appreciation of wines, liqueurs & spirits.

Florists

Florists

Overview

A florist may work in one of several sectors, in a shop, within an event company, or for different types of retail organizations. A florist is aware of which flowers are available in which seasons of the year and which flowers work well in combination with each other and offer advice and translate a client’s vision into displays that are beautiful and captivating. The Florist’s responsibilities include processing flower shipments, pruning the flowers at periodic intervals, and arranging marketable bouquets. You should also furnish clients with relevant flower-related information. To ensure success as a Florist, you should demonstrate accurate, updated knowledge about flowers’ nutritional requirements. Invariably, a terrific Florist will craft robust packaging solutions to avoid preventable breakages.

Competitors will need to understand how to condition these floral materials and plants, considering irritant or poisonous materials, the variety of stem types, and show appropriate cutting, watering, and feeding methods. They will need to work in a way that minimizes damage to the environment and maintain health and safety codes of practice.

Competitors will be able to apply the principles and elements of floral design and ensure the dominance of botanical materials feature in the designs. They will also be able to interpret a brief and design floral displays interpreting a theme, using dominance, contrasts, and combinations of color effectively to create harmony in design.

Digital Media

Digital Media

Overview

Producers are responsible for facilitating a project from beginning to end. They are involved in every stage of the television program, film or video or social media, overseeing the project from start to finish, both in the studio and on location. They work alongside the director and other creative departments including camera, sound, set design, and post-production to ensure the project is completed successfully, on time, and budget.

The BRAVO competition is largely practical, although competitors will be required to have a thorough understanding of pre-production. It is also expected that competitors have a good working knowledge of camera operation, audio recording, and post-production techniques and software.

This BRAVO competition has been designed to focus on all the essential skills needed for a successful career within the Digital Media industry. Competitors undertake varying creative roles associated with producing a media production and are required to work towards industry standards.

Each team will initially plan and produce a video/media clip/news clip from a given brief. The teams with the winning concept will then have a chance to pitch their concept to panels of judges. During the live heat, and before their pitch, each team will have to complete a task as outlined to them within a given time frame. The competitors will then have to add this to their pitch.

Overview

Competitors taking part in this BRAVO competition should be able to
